Étti Rochaeti Soetisna (well-known as Étti R.S.) was born in Ciamis, West Java, on 31 August 1958. Started writing in her teenage years, Étti writes poems and short stories. She studied Sundanese literature at Padjadjaran University. In 1997 at the same university she wrote her thesis in philological study on an Old Sundanese manuscript called “Batara Kala”. She is a government official, working for Tourism and Culture Bureau of Bandung. She is also the chairperson of the PPSS (Paguyuban Panglawungan Sastra Sunda) (Association of Sundanese Literature Forums). Her poems are collected in Jamparing (Arrow) (1984), Gondéwa (Bow) (1987), and Maung Bayangan (Hunted Tiger) (1994).

Some of her poems, which are written in the form of modern poetry, express a tragic situation of the self in reaching her ultimate goal. Here is one of them:

Maung Bayangan

Kuring maung bayangan!
diboro lantaran sérong
diburu lantaran pamuk
sérong ciciptaan nu lohong
pamuk lantaran dirucuk
da puguh jaman durjana

Kuring maung bayangan!
ringkang didodoho maot
rénghap diintip ku pati
hayang ngider méméh jengker
ngaranjah saacan ajal
bari tigin pikeun Gusti

Some others, which are written in the form of traditional pupuh, may be read as song lyrics. Étti herself can sing Sundanese songs, i.e. the tembang, nicely.***
