Wayang maker Endin Sukandi died at his house in a Bandung suburb of Cigereleng early this morning. He was 70 years old.

My friend Opik Sunandar Sunarya, a dalang ‘puppet master’ from the village of Kebon Hui, West Bandung, told me the sad news through a text-message a couple of hours ago. It was for Opik’s wayang performance that Bah Endin had made wayang golek (a kind of traditional wooden puppet) over the last several months.

I myself remember an evening, a couple of months ago, when Bah Endin came to my house at Negla, Bandung. To my surprise, he gave me Kresna, one of the venerable characters in wayang story. He said that the hand-made wooden puppet was a gift for me. And we had a warm conversation through the night. I didn’t realize that it was the last time I met with the old master.

I have previously posted a short article concerning the life and time of Bah Endin in April this year (see ‘The Wayang Maker’, http://sundanesecorner.org/2011/04/01/the-wayang-maker/). May he rests in peace.***
